School Bus Safety Tips for Parents and Students

Safety Guidelines:

  • Arrive Early: Be at the school bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival time to avoid rushing and ensure safety.
  • Stay Away from Traffic: While waiting for the bus, stand at least five giant steps away from the curb or roadway to avoid accidents.
  • Don't Chase the Bus: If you miss the bus, never run after it. Wait for the next one or find alternative transportation.
  • Boarding Etiquette: When getting on or off the bus, avoid pushing or crowding to maintain order and safety.
  • Crossing Safely: Always walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing the road, ensuring visibility to the driver.
  • Avoid Bus Wheels: Stay clear of the bus wheels at all times, as the driver may not see you.
  • Cross with Caution: Wait until the bus has stopped all traffic before crossing the road, exercising caution at all times.
  • Watch for Hazards: Be cautious of clothing or items that may get caught on bus handrails or doors, removing any potential hazards.
  • Stay Seated: While the bus is in motion, remain seated and keep all body parts inside the window to prevent accidents.
  • Respect the Driver: Listen to the bus driver's instructions and treat them with respect to ensure a safe journey.
  • Railroad Safety: If the bus crosses railroad tracks, remain quiet to allow the driver to listen for approaching trains, following their instructions accordingly.
  • Emergency Procedures: In case of an emergency, follow the driver's directions and avoid playing with emergency exits or blocking aisles with belongings.
  • Maintain Order: Students must stay in their seats, face the front, and keep hands and feet to themselves during the ride.
  • Secure Loose Objects: Ensure that drawstrings and other loose objects are secure before exiting the bus to prevent accidents.
  • Crossing Behind the Bus: Never cross the street behind the bus, as drivers may not see you and accidents can occur.
  • Don't Retrieve Items: If something is dropped inside or outside the bus, do not go back for it. Alert the driver instead.
  • Stranger Danger: Never talk to strangers at the bus stop or accept rides from them.
  • Parental Presence: Parents or guardians should be present at the bus stop to receive kindergarteners and younger children.

By following these safety tips, parents and students can ensure a secure and pleasant school bus.
